Welcome to my website.

In a previous update, I shared I was on a bit of a writing hiatus, derailed by a career in commercial real estate. Curious if I could still tap into the creative part of my brain, I enrolled in The University of Iowa’s online class, How Writers Write Fiction. I found the process of mining my imagination and the writing that sprung from it deeply satisfying.

I’ve always considered myself a short story writer. So I was caught off guard midway through a subsequent University of Iowa class to discover what I was working on needed a larger container to hold it. I had no idea what I was doing. But writing is the act of discovery, over and over again, and so I set off on what became a long journey of discovery. Along with the feedback of some terrific writing friends, I managed to write a 56,000 word novel.

The Color of Sea Glass is a coming-of-age novel that follows fifteen-year-old Emma and her two best friends in the aftermath of a deadly car crash. Emma bears responsibility for the crash, her estranged parents caught up in their own needs and desires. She retreats into silence, her internal monologue insightful and witty, informed by an adult wisdom beyond her years. As she struggles to make sense of everything, the past collides with the present, leading her to question her relationships with the adults in her world, the bonds of friendship, and the adequacy of words to convey meaning.
